With a major overhaul for 2027, Volkswagen is turning the Atlas Cross Sport into a midsize SUV of a much higher order than what it is set to replace.

The completely reworked 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is here with new styling and a cabin that has been made more luxurious. Between the larger screens and some well-considered comfort items, one can expect a more pleasurable experience whether on the way to work or out for a weekend drive.

Volkswagen has sold in excess of 220,000 units in the U.S. since the model was introduced in 2020, so there is no shortage of buyers who appreciate an SUV with the versatility of the three-row Atlas but without the need for seven seats. The Atlas Cross Sport has always had an appealing personality in the lineup, trading that third row for something with a bit more style.

The second generation is all new sheet metal with a cleaner, more sculpted profile. While you will still see the trademark sloping roofline, the exterior has been given a contemporary update with stacked LED headlights, full-width lighting and, if specified, illuminated badging. The tailgate is now flush with the bumper and optional 20- or 21-inch wheels lend it some presence.

The new paint options are a nice change from the sea of black, white and gray that seems to be the norm for SUVs these days. Dark Sage Metallic has an understated, almost architectural air about it; Blackberry Metallic offers a richer tone. And for those wanting something warmer and more neutral, there is a new Sandstone finish.

Open the door and the changes are more apparent. Volkswagen has put a lot of thought into the cabin design, using softer materials and contrasting colors to create a more cohesive look. Gray wood trim is standard, though one can opt for Pebble Grey, black or medium-brown. Upper trims will have olive-green contrast stitching and perforated backlit panels on the doors.

Ambient lighting is more prominent as well, with 10 colors as standard and up to 30 on the top end, running across the dash and doors. Comfort hasn’t been overlooked: the front seats are a redesigned 12-way affair as standard, and on higher trims both occupants can make use of full-back massage and better thigh support. There is still a panoramic sunroof on offer for extra roominess.

The screens have grown, as they do. You will find a 12.9-inch infotainment system in the standard model, but Volkswagen expects about 90 percent to come with the 15-inch touchscreen. A 10.25-inch digital cluster is also part of the package.

Then there are the practicalities. The cabin is fitted with five USB-C ports and enough room to put two phones down for wireless charging side by side. A new Driver Experience Dial gives you physical control over things like volume and drive mode. If you are waiting around with the car parked, the available AirConsole system lets passengers use their phones as controllers to play games on the center screen, which is a welcome diversion. Other standard fare includes a hands-free liftgate and parking sensors front and rear.

Volkswagen has not neglected the engine bay in its quest for a more premium feel. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four puts out 282 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, 13 more horsepower than before. It is mated to an eight-speed automatic and, for those who face snow or mountain roads, 4Motion all-wheel drive is at optional. It can also tow up to 5,000 pounds.

A hybrid version is in the works, but we will have to wait for the midcycle refresh for that.

The 2027 model will be coming from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to dealers in the early part of next year, with pricing to follow. For the buyer who wants the room of a family SUV but not the third row, Volkswagen is making a stronger case with this one. The massaging seats, the distinctive interior and the new approach to tech give the Atlas Cross Sport a certain character in a crowded field.
